Overview

Narratorr ("we", "our", or "the app") is an iOS application that converts text from EPUBs, PDFs, web articles, and other documents into audio using text-to-speech technology. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about our data practices.

The short version

We collect minimal data, process your text for speech synthesis on our own servers, and never sell your information. Your documents stay on your device. We do not store or save the text you send for text-to-speech conversion. When using Device TTS mode, all speech synthesis happens entirely on your device — no text is sent to any server.

Information we collect

  • Text for Text-to-Speech:

    When you use the listen feature, text is sent to our servers for audio synthesis. This text is processed in real-time and immediately discarded after the audio is generated. We do not store, log, or retain any text content you send for TTS processing.

  • Device Identifier:

    We generate a random, anonymous identifier for your device to track your free usage quota (1 hour). This identifier cannot be used to personally identify you and is not linked to any other information.

  • Subscription Information:

    If you subscribe, Apple processes all payment information through the App Store. We only receive a receipt verification to confirm your subscription status. We never see your payment details.

  • Usage Data:

    We track aggregated, anonymous usage statistics such as total listening time to manage free tier quotas. This data is not linked to your identity.

  • Usage Time Tracking:

    We track your listening time to manage free tier quotas. Time is calculated based on actual audio playback duration — only the real-time length of audio played counts. Pausing, buffering, or reading without TTS does not count toward your usage. This data is stored anonymously and cannot be linked to your identity.

Information we do NOT collect

  • • Your name, email address, or contact information
  • • Your precise or approximate location
  • • Your contacts, photos, or other personal files
  • • Your browsing history outside the app
  • • Any advertising or tracking identifiers
  • • The content of your documents (stored locally only)

Your documents and files

EPUBs, PDFs, TXT files, and web articles you import are stored locally on your device only. We never upload, access, or store your documents on our servers. The only data transmitted is the specific text you choose to convert to speech, which is immediately discarded after processing.

Text-to-Speech processing

We use Kokoro TTS, an open-source text-to-speech model hosted on our own GPU infrastructure. Your text is:

  • • Transmitted securely to our servers
  • • Processed in real-time to generate audio
  • • Immediately discarded after audio delivery
  • • Never stored, logged, or used for any other purpose

We do not use any third-party TTS services. All processing happens on infrastructure we own and control.

Device TTS (on-device processing)

Narratorr offers a free, offline Device TTS mode that uses your iPhone's built-in speech synthesis (Apple's AVSpeechSynthesizer). When using Device TTS:

  • • All text processing happens entirely on your device
  • • No text is sent to our servers or any third-party service
  • • No internet connection is required
  • • No usage time is tracked or billed
  • • This mode is completely free with no limits

No AI training on your content

We do NOT use your content to train artificial intelligence models. Your text, documents, and reading activity are never used for machine learning, model improvement, or any form of AI training. The text you send for speech synthesis is processed solely to generate audio and is immediately discarded. We believe your reading choices are private.

Third-party services

  • Apple App Store & StoreKit:

    Subscription payments are processed entirely by Apple. We use StoreKit to verify subscription status. See Apple's Privacy Policy.

Data retention and deletion

We retain your anonymous device identifier and usage quota information for as long as you use the app. Text sent for TTS is never retained.

Deleting your data: Deleting the app removes all local data from your device, including your library and reading progress. To request deletion of server-side usage data (anonymous device identifier and quota), email us at narratorapp@gmail.com with your request.

Fair use policy

Subscribers enjoy unlimited text-to-speech, subject to a fair use limit of 24 hours of listening time per calendar day. This policy exists to prevent automated or abusive usage of our service. Normal human listening is never affected by this limit.

Data security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) for all data transmission and secure server infrastructure.

Children's privacy

Narratorr is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected such information, please contact us immediately.

Your rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your data. Since we collect minimal anonymous data, there is typically no personal information to access or delete. If you have questions about your data, please contact us.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any significant changes by posting the new policy in the app or on our website with an updated revision date.
